Autumn in the Jerte Valley

My parents are from Extremadura and immigrated to Barcelona in the early sixties. I have a lot of attachment to Extremadura because I have spent much of my childhood summer vacations there. This Holy Week I had the opportunity to make a road trip through Extremadura and we visited Cáceres, Trujillo, Mérida and the Jerte Valley in spring.

Many people have the image of the Jerte Valley in early spring engraved on the retina, when all the cherry trees burst into bloom. It would become the homeland version of hanami Japanese. Even so, it is also worth visiting during the fall, because the area has a high concentration of chestnut trees, in addition to the cherry trees. At this time of the year, all the trees are filled with golden tones and the cherry trees provide brushstrokes of reddish tones, which would become the Spanish version of the koyo Japanese (sorry for the analogy, but it's the first thing that comes to mind).

To make the Valle del Jerte more known in the fall, the Autumnal, a set of activities such as hiking and mountain biking in the region, a medieval market and gastronomic events. Of all these, it is worth highlighting the one held on November 10 in Cabezuela del Valle: the “Fall of the leaf”, which includes the tasting of typical dishes like crumbs (which I love) and a street market with street stalls.

La Otoñada 2012 It is celebrated from November 5 to December 15 and, if you want to have more information about the program of activities you can find it in this link.
